Darl McVay Obituary

Darl Lee McVay, 75, Twelve Mile, Indiana, peacefully passed away at home on Wednesday, February 19, 2020, surrounded by his loving family.

Darl was born on June 28, 1944, in Grass Creek, Indiana, the son of Everett and Thelma McVay.  On June 5, 1967, in Deedsvile, Indiana, he was married to Jessie Ann Sullivan, and she survives.

Darl attended Grass Creek School before he started working.  He worked for twenty-five years at Wilson Foods before retirement.  He then decided retirement wasn’t for him and went to work for an additional five years at Trellaborg.   He was a member of the Lucerne Christian Church.

Darl respected the freedoms of living in this great land.  He especially loved the great outdoors.  It fueled a passion in him that he passed down to his children.  He taught them how to fish, hunt, and respect the land.  He would take his family to Northern Minnesota for two weeks during summer for summer vacation and enjoyed all that the lake had to offer.

Darl never met a stranger in his life and could strike up a conversation with anybody.  He loved his community and was always eager to help with community projects.  He especially enjoyed setting up/tearing down the annual Twelve Mile Christmas Pageant and participating in it.

He is survived by his devoted wife of fifty-two years, Jessie Ann McVay, Twelve Mile; daughters, Diana McVay, Twelve Mile, Catherine (Chris) Calisto, Twelve Mile; and son, Phillip (Barbara) McVay, Lafayette; grandchildren, Erik McVay, Natasha Calisto, Drew and Rian McVay, Colton Valenta, Kendra McVay, Carington Calisto, Audree McVay, Caydence Calisto, and great-granddaughter, Brielle McVay. Darl is also survived by brothers and sisters; Wayne (Reggie) McVay, Monticello; Marvin (Terry) McVay, Twelve Mile; Lyle (Madie) McVay, Poplar Bluff, Mo.;  Roger McVay, Royal Center; Anita Miller, Royal Center; Linda Gulley, New Baden, Ill.; and Connie (Robin) Davis, Lagro.  Darl was adored by many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; Everett and Thelma McVay; mother and father-in-law, Lloyd and Thelma Sullivan; sisters, Carolyn Spittler, Virginia Niman, and Faye Milligan; and brothers-in-law, Kenneth Miller and Bill Gulley.
